Weed abatement Inspections


Homes are damaged or destroyed each year throughout Southern California when wildfire spreads from undeveloped areas into developed areas. To help prevent the spread of fire, the Chino Valley Fire District reminds residents to keep their homes and property clear of weeds, brush and hazardous vegetation. It is important to remember that weed abatement is a year-round commitment to keeping your family, home, and community safe. The Weed Abatement Guide provides information regarding the requirements of Ordinance 2022-01.

As a courtesy, the Fire District notifies residents in advance of upcoming inspections through public service announcements on local cable channels; publicizing dates on utility bills; and by placing banners throughout the Chino Valley.

Residents are responsible for clearing their properties themselves or can hire a contractor to clear the property for them.  A list of Weed Abatement Contractors (PDF)  is provided as a courtesy.  The Fire District does not endorse any contractor on the courtesy list.  Please note: The Fire District’s contracted Weed Abatement contractor is excluded from this list. 

Seasonal Weed Abatement Program

Fire inspectors conduct property inspections for weeds and other combustible vegetation that presents, or potentially presents, a fire hazard each Spring and Fall. For guidelines, please reference the Weed Abatement Guide.


Fire District Inspectors will begin inspecting parcels May 2nd for fire dangers posed by overgrown weeds or other hazardous vegetation.  Non-Compliant parcels will be notified by mail in early May.

If the weeds are removed before the June 8th reinspection date, no penalty is assessed. If the fire hazard is present after the reinspection date, the property owner will be assessed a $300 Non-Compliant Penalty.

If no action is taken to abate the hazard, the Fire District will administer the removal of the hazard resulting in a $328 Weed Abatement Administrative Cost Recovery fee and the contractor costs, if applicable.  Charges will be billed to the property owner on file with the County Assessor’s Office and, if not paid, will be sent to lien against the property after an Assessment Hearing.

All notices, citations, and invoices are sent to the property owner on file with the County Assessor’s office.  It is the responsibility of the parcel owner to advise our office of a pending sale or transfer of sale.  


Parcels are also inspected annually in the Fall, primarily targeting re-growth of vegetation and tumbleweeds. Inspections begin the last week of August. Non-compliant parcel owners will be notified by mail in September.  Reinspections will occur in Mid-October.  The aforementioned penalties and fees are applicable, if abatement is not obtained.
