Is the gear that firefighters wear fireproof? How much does it weigh?
The gear firefighters wear weighs about 50 pounds. The clothes are called "turnouts" or "bunker" gear because they were originally turned inside out and kept next to bunks to facilitate a quick change at night. The turnouts are made of an aramid fiber that is flame resistant but not fireproof, so it will burn. Firefighters wear their turnouts when responding to structure fires, hazardous materials incidents and traffic accidents.
